1667: The First Official Salon

The first official Salon exhibition was held by the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris, originally to showcase the work of recent graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts.

  • In 1773, The Salon became a public event held in the Salon Carré of the Louvre, becoming a major annual or biennial art event and the key platform for artists seeking recognition.

1737: Beyond the Académie

  • 1737: The Salon became a public event held in the Salon Carré of the Louvre, becoming a major annual or biennial art event and the key platform for artists seeking recognition.
  • 1748: A jury was introduced to select artworks, solidifying the Salon’s status and influence over artistic standards and careers.
  • 1863: The Salon des Refusés was established by Napoleon III to display works rejected by the official Salon, marking the first public recognition of avant-garde artists.
  • 1881: Control of the Salon passed from the École des Beaux-Arts to the Société des Artistes Français, reflecting shifts in the art establishment.
  • 1884: Rival exhibitions began, notably the Salon des Indépendants, which had no jury and embraced more experimental art.
  • 1890: The last official Salon exhibition by the original organizing body was held; new competing salons and exhibitions increasingly diminished its prominence into the 20th century.
